Best GPU for architectural visualization in 2026: real numbers from a working studio

RTX 5090, 5080, 4090, and the RTX Pro 6000 tested on Corona, V-Ray, Unreal 5, and Chaos Vantage. Which one actually pays back on client work.

The GPU question comes up in every archviz forum, discord, and reddit thread, and most of the answers online are written by people who do not actually render for a living. This is what four cards look like on real production scenes, tested across the four engines that pay our bills. No synthetic benchmarks, no cherry picked demo files. Just Tuesday afternoon work.

The test scene is a 1.2gb 3ds Max file of a nine unit mid rise residential with full site landscaping, PBR interior sets in six units, and a Corona sky at 6:15pm. It is a scene that reflects what most of our exterior client work actually looks like. We rendered the same shot on all four cards at 4k with a fixed sample budget, then repeated the shot in V-Ray, Unreal 5.5 with path tracing, and Chaos Vantage.

RTX 5090 was the fastest card in every test. On the Corona shot it turned the reference frame in 11 minutes 40 seconds with the built in denoiser. V-Ray GPU came in at 8 minutes 20. Unreal path tracing hit clean convergence in 2 minutes 15 per frame at 4k. Chaos Vantage ran the walkthrough at 44 fps at 4k with DLSS 4 quality. On paper this is the fastest consumer card that exists and it earned that title on every workload we threw at it. It is also loud, drinks 600 watts under load, and costs enough that the payback math needs to be honest.

RTX 4090 remains an excellent purchase in 2026. On the same Corona shot it turned the frame in 15 minutes 40 seconds, which is 34 percent slower than the 5090 in wall clock time. V-Ray came in at 11 minutes 30. Unreal path tracing was 3 minutes flat per frame. Chaos Vantage held 32 fps at 4k with DLSS 4. It has 24gb of VRAM, which is enough for every real scene we push through it, and it now sells at a discount because the 5090 launched. For a studio adding a second render node this is currently the best value on the market.

RTX 5080 is the one to be careful about. It has 16gb of VRAM, which is the same as the 4080 it replaces, and that number matters. Our test scene pushed VRAM usage to 14.2gb in V-Ray GPU, which is uncomfortably close to the ceiling. On any scene with heavy scatter or high resolution textures, 16gb runs out and the card has to fall back to system RAM, which slows things down by more than the raw compute advantage of the card. For interior work with lighter scenes it is fine. For exterior with dense landscape it is not the right choice.

RTX Pro 6000 is the workstation card, previously sold as the RTX 6000 Ada generation. It has 96gb of VRAM on the current generation. For our test scene it was fractionally slower than the 5090 on Corona because it runs at a lower clock, but it never got close to a VRAM ceiling, and it can hold multiple scenes in memory at once for interactive review. If you regularly work on masterplan scale scenes with billions of polygons or heavy scatter, this is the correct card. If you do not, the 5090 or 4090 will render your work faster for less money.

The multi GPU question is worth naming. Corona and V-Ray both scale nearly linearly across two GPUs of the same class. Two 4090s in a single machine beat a single 5090 on total render time and cost about the same. Unreal path tracing scales less well because of the way it batches frames. Chaos Vantage does not use the second GPU meaningfully in real time playback. If your primary work is offline still rendering, two 4090s is currently the best price to performance configuration you can build.

Power and cooling are not glamorous, but they decide whether the card actually delivers its rated performance. The 5090 draws 600 watts under sustained load and needs at least 1000 watts of quality PSU headroom to stay stable, plus enough case airflow to keep the GPU under 78 degrees. A hot 5090 in a badly ventilated case thermal throttles down to about 4080 performance, and then you have paid a 5090 price for a slower card. Airflow first, then components.

The Mac question comes up regularly. The M4 Max and M4 Ultra chips are impressive on Blender Cycles thanks to the Metal backend, and they are quiet and efficient. For a solo Blender artist working on stills, an M4 Max Mac Studio is a defensible choice. For a studio running Corona, V-Ray, Unreal, or Chaos Vantage, none of which run natively on Mac, it is not the right platform. Follow the engine, not the brand.

The buy recommendation for a working studio in mid 2026 is boring but correct. If you are building a new primary workstation and money is not the driver, RTX 5090 with 1200 watt PSU and generous cooling. If you are adding a render node or building for value, RTX 4090 at whatever discount you can find. If you work on masterplan scale scenes, RTX Pro 6000. Do not buy an RTX 5080 for archviz unless you know your scenes stay well under 14gb of VRAM. Skip the mid range entirely, the payback on your time is not there.

Is the RTX 5090 worth it for archviz?
Yes if you are the primary artist on a workstation that renders every day. It is 30 to 40 percent faster than the RTX 4090 across Corona, V-Ray, Unreal, and Chaos Vantage in our tests. The payback is measurable in weeks for a full time artist. For a second render node, the 4090 at its current discount is better value.
Is 16gb of VRAM enough for archviz in 2026?
For interior work with tight scenes, usually. For exterior work with scatter, landscape, and 4k textures, no. Our production exterior test scene pushed 14.2gb in V-Ray GPU, which leaves no headroom on a 16gb card. Buy 24gb or more if you do any exterior work.
Should I run two GPUs or one bigger GPU?
For offline rendering in Corona or V-Ray, two RTX 4090s beat a single RTX 5090 on total throughput and cost about the same money. For real time work in Unreal or Chaos Vantage, a single fast card is better because those engines do not scale linearly across two GPUs.
