What is architectural visualization?

Architectural visualization is the practice of representing buildings, interiors, and landscapes photographically before they exist. It sits between architecture, cinematography, and post-production, and its job is to make a design decision legible to a client, a jury, or a buyer.

The craft has three main outputs. Stills for marketing, competition boards, and brochures. Animation for flythroughs, drone-style reveals, and cinematic sequences. Real-time for interactive walkthroughs, configurators, and VR sales tools. Most working arch viz artists do at least two of the three, and the pipelines increasingly share assets.

A good arch viz image is not just a technically clean render. It is a photograph of a building that does not exist, framed the way a location photographer would frame the building if it did. That framing decision, more than any render setting, is what separates a portfolio piece from a technical exercise.

The pipeline is roughly: modeling (3ds Max, Blender, or Revit), lighting and rendering (Corona, V-Ray, Cycles, Lumen), then post in Photoshop or Nuke. On top of that sits a post workflow of AOVs, cryptomatte, and grading passes that carries as much weight as the render itself.
