HDRI lighting for arch viz: choosing, capturing, and cheating a dome

The dome light is the fastest way to a believable render and the fastest way to a fake one. A practitioner guide to selecting and shooting HDRIs that actually match your scene.

The most convincing arch viz frame I ever shipped was lit by a single HDRI and about ninety seconds of exposure balancing. The least convincing frame I ever shipped was also lit by a single HDRI. The tool is the same. The difference is in how honestly the plate was captured, whether the sun in the image agrees with the sun you told the scene to expect, and whether you were disciplined enough to stop adding lights.

Start with a rule that costs nothing and saves days. Match the HDRI to the site. If the project is in Copenhagen and the HDRI was captured in Marrakech, the sky will always feel wrong even after you neutralise the color balance. What you cannot color grade away is the turbidity, the altitude of the sun, and the elevation of the horizon. Those are baked into the pixels. Pick a plate shot in a climate that resembles your site, at a time of day that resembles your intended hour, or accept that you are compositing a photograph of a different city onto your building.

For dome light setup itself, keep it boring. In V-Ray, a VRayDomeLight with the HDRI as its texture, adaptive dome on for interiors, off for exteriors where you want the sun disc to cast crisp shadows. In Corona, a CoronaLight in dome mode with the HDRI wired into the color slot, no other configuration. In Cycles, an environment texture node in the world shader with a background node at strength 1. The temptation to fiddle is where problems start. Every scene I have debugged with muddy shadows started with someone tinting the dome or scaling intensity to 0.65 because the render looked too bright.

The right first move when the render looks too bright is exposure. Camera exposure, ISO 200, aperture f8, shutter speed adjusted until the histogram sits where it should. If you find yourself pulling exposure by more than two stops from EV 12 for daylight exteriors, the problem is not the HDRI, the problem is you are lighting a room with the wrong window area or you are pointing a camera at a sun ball.

Capturing your own HDRIs still matters. Even in 2026 with libraries of thousands of paid plates, the plate that will match your specific site is the one you shot from the site. A Ricoh Theta Z1 costs less than a used bike and produces a 6720 by 3360 spherical that is genuinely usable for real work. Shoot at seven bracketed exposures at two stop increments, merge in PTGui or the free RawTherapee alternative, and export a 32 bit floating point EXR. The whole workflow, from arriving on site to a finished HDRI on the drive, is about ninety minutes if you are practiced.

One trap on captured HDRIs is the sun. Consumer 360 cameras do not have the dynamic range to hold the sun disc without clipping. If you plan to use the HDRI for exterior work with a visible sun, replace the sun in Photoshop or Nuke with a small painted disc at proper luminance, or use a separate directional sun in your renderer and mask the burned sun in the plate. Skipping this step is why so many captured HDRI exteriors have shadows that read as directionless.

For interiors specifically, wrap the plate around the building, not just the room. Even if the render is a tight kitchen shot, use an HDRI that includes the actual context outside the window, or composite a still image plate into a background environment. Reflections on the kettle and the pendant glass will pick up the environment map, and a generic sky HDRI will read as generic sky in every reflective surface in the room.

The last note is a business one. Build a library of forty or fifty HDRIs you trust, categorised by climate and hour, and stop shopping for the perfect plate for every project. Consistency across a studio portfolio comes from constraint, not from access to a bigger asset store.
